Moutard
Maison Moutard, located in the Côte des Bar region of Champagne, is renowned for its commitment to showcasing rare grape varieties alongside the classic trio of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier. With 23 hectares of vineyards, this family-owned house cultivates six of the seven permitted Champagne grape varieties, including the seldom-seen Pinot Blanc, Petit Meslier, and Arbane. Each of these grapes brings unique characteristics to the wines; for instance, the Arbane offers finesse with floral notes and hints of pippin apple, making Moutard's offerings truly distinctive. Founded by Lucien Moutard, who passionately planted the estate's initial vines, the family's ethos revolves around sustainable viticulture and a hands-on approach to winemaking. They prioritize the health of the soil and ecosystem, ensuring that each step—from vineyard management to bottling—is overseen by family members. This dedication, combined with traditional winemaking techniques such as aging in Burgundian oak barrels and extended bottle rests, results in champagnes that reflect both the heritage of the region and the unique terroir of the Moutard estate.
