The champagne of New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve is perhaps the moment most explicitly linked to champagne in the year. As the clock strikes midnight, bottles are opened across the country, but the choice of bottle determines whether it is a routine gesture or a moment that lingers. For the midnight toast we recommend a non-vintage brut with enough character to be remembered, yet accessible enough that every face at the table enjoys it. For those wanting something more, a rosé champagne or a blanc de noirs, save it for the second round, after the toast, when the conversation has returned and there is time to savour it properly.

Dinner and countdown

At a New Year's Eve dinner, champagne pairs well with savoury appetisers, shellfish or a first course with cream or butter sauce. With richer dishes, a main of game or a rich stock-based sauce, we often switch to a red wine and keep the champagne for the aperitif and the countdown moment. For those who want to serve bubbles throughout the whole dinner: combine a light Blanc de Blancs at the start with a richer blanc de noirs or magnum for the main course.

Order in good time

Order by 20 December for guaranteed delivery before New Year's Eve. For late orders we keep a selection in stock each year, but the choice narrows noticeably after 22 December, so the sooner the better. For larger groups and event planners we coordinate the delivery date and window carefully in advance. A magnum (1.5 L) is particularly well suited to New Year's Eve: it stays fresh longer after opening and looks the part at a festive table.
